Weight Loss, Exercise And Reducing Calories

F
or an equal amount of calories, reducing food or exercise gives the same results for weight loss, according to a recent research at the University of Louisiana published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Research has shown that the weight loss was evenly spread. There is no way, says the author, selectively lose belly or thin thighs.

According to the results of this research, increase muscle mass would not an extra weight loss by stimulating metabolism at rest.

On the other hand, the reduction of calories in the diet only without increasing physical activity not reduce muscle mass. This calls into question current beliefs.

Dr. Eric Ravussin and his colleagues followed 24 overweight people for six months. Of these, 12 have followed a diet representing a reduction of calories by 25% compared to normal.

The remaining 12 have reduced their calorie intake by 12.5% and increased their physical activity to lose another 12.5% calories (through weight loss exercise 5 times a week). All food was provided by the university and carefully measured.

Volunteers in both groups lost about 10% of their weight, 24% of their body fat and 27% of their abdominal fat mass. The distribution of body fat was not influenced by the method used.

The author recalls, however, how much physical activity is important for general health.
