P
eople who tend to eat for emotional reasons are more difficult to lose weight or maintain weight loss, shows a new study published in the journal Obesity. Two groups participant in this research. The first consisted of 286 men and women participating in a weight loss program.
The second included 3,345 members of the National Weight Control Registry, which lists in the context of a study, adults who have lost 30 pounds and has managed to maintain that weight loss for a year.
Participants responded to a questionnaire that included a scale of the disinhibition of eating habits in response to emotional or cognitive induces (eg eat to console or to distract) or social (eg eat more during a celebration).
More participants reported eating in response to emotional states, the less they lost weight while those who had already managed for weight loss (an average of 10% of their initial weight) were more likely to resume within 3 to 5 years, "says Heather Niemeier of Brown University, the principal author of the research.
Eating for emotional reasons was more predictor of a lower weight control than other psychological factors such as depression and perceived stress.
Eating more in social situations did not seem to affect weight loss control (probably because it does not happen on a regular basis).
