Weight Loss Is Not As Fast As Assumed

P
eople who follow a weight loss program does not often lose as much weight as they should and the results of a recent research could help explain why.

Research has shown that people tend to take more weight during the holidays. Recent research, published in the journal Obesity, shows that it is also true for weekends. On Saturday is the worst enemy to the waist, showed she says.

Forty-eight people, 50 to 60 years, with a healthy weight or overweight without being obese took part in this study, which focused on the effects of calorie restriction on longevity.

Before the weight loss program, Saturday was the day when participants ate the most. The additional calories taken the weekend corresponded to a weight of 4 pounds per year.

Participants were followed for one year while a third of them followed a strict weight loss diet, third followed an weight loss exercise program and another third maintain their habits.

Those who followed the weight loss program or exercise program tended to lose weight more slowly than expected because they ate over the weekend that week even if they do not always realize.

Those who followed the weight loss program this week but steadily losing the weekend as they took more calories especially on Saturday. Those who followed the weight loss exercise program, lost weight this week and took the weekend as they ate more on Saturdays and Sundays.

The consistency of these results before and during the intervention was surprising, said Susan B. Racette of the University of Washington, the main author.

To avoid sabotaging the efforts of weight loss on weekends, holidays and vacations, planning is very important, said she says.

It suggests itself to bring healthy food for shopping, eating a little before going to a party not to be hungry to prepare a lunch for the road and some outings to have a alternative to junk food. Pay attention to the size of portions can enjoy holidays and vacations without sabotaging its efforts to weight loss.

If the holidays are not necessarily a good time to try to lose weight, maintain it can be an achievable goal.
