Smoking And Overweight Associated With Depression And Anxiety

P
eople who suffer from depression or anxiety are more likely to be obese or to smoke according to a U.S. national study published in the journal General Hospital Psychiatry.

"The relationship between obesity and depression is plausible for several reasons," says Tara Strine, a researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and principal author of the research.

"Some people who are overweight can become depressed because of societal attitudes toward obesity. In addition, while depression can lead to a loss of appetite and weight in some people, others eat more and gain weight. "

This research compiled data from a telephone survey of more than 200,000 adults. The investigation was checking whether the respondents were currently depressed or had already been diagnosed with depression or anxiety as well as smoking, weight, physical activity and alcohol consumption.

Approximately 8.7% of respondents reported being depressed at the time of the survey, 15.7% had already had a previous diagnosis of depression and 11.3% had already been diagnosed with anxiety.

Respondents with a current or past diagnosis of depression were 60% more likely to be obese and two times more likely to smoke than those who have never been depressed.

Those with an anxiety disorder were 30% more likely to be obese and two times more smoke.

Participants have already been diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorder were also more likely to be physically inactive and reported episodes of binge eating or excessive consumption of alcohol.

Chronic diseases and depression often coexist, the first feeding the second and vice versa, comments the author.
